Why does whiskey help me feel relaxed and more focused the next day after I drink?

If I have one or two whiskeys in the evening, the next day I'm completely relaxed and can focus on my work very easily. I'm a computer programmer and I'm normally very tense and nervous. In the evening after the drink or two I do feel more relaxed during the time the alcohol is in my system. But I'm curious about why there is a positive affect for me long after the alcohol has left my system. Note that I'm a very light drinker with a low tolerance and I only drink a few times a month. Any ideas anyone?

That type of reaction long after the alcohol is out of your system could be a condition of your mind set. Be careful, you dont want your body or your mind to think that the only way to relax is to have a drink. That could be very habit forming. If anything I would think that you have possibly mistaken that relaxed feeling for actual fatigue. Drinking alcohol of any kind will make you dehydrated, and that will lead to a feeling of fatigue. If you are normally a tense person, it would be easy to confuse the two.
